Elk Island National Park, Astotin Lake Campground, Alberta

Finally made it to the outskirts of Edmonton in time for tomorrow’s visit to the Vet for SweetPea.

The park is quite small, 194 sq km (Canada’s eight smallest national park), but is Canada’s largest fully enclosed (i.e. fenced) park. Unfortunately it is not Canada’s largest dog park, but is fenced due to the Bison conservation program. We were only here for two days, but we didn’t see even one bison.  Maybe they had this week off?

The drive from the entrance of the park to the campground winds through very boggy lakes. Lots of beaver lodges, but again no beavers in sight.

There are two camping areas, one with electricity for RVs, and a second general camping area. As you can see from the photos the general camping area sites are quite close together, but the RV sites are worse. No electricity in our site, so out with the solar panels and generator. Generators can only be run from 9-11am and 6-8pm. So no toast for breakfast.

The Vet can fit in SweetPea’s surgery (laparoscopic spay and gastropexy) next Tuesday, so we will be back in this campground in a week. Maybe we will see some bison or beavers then.
