KrugXP held an off-road training weekend at the Mercedes testing/training ground in Biberach, Germany.
In addition to Rosie there were two other Krug expedition vehicles there for training: a Rhino (smaller module on a Mercedes Atego chassis), and a larger 6×6 vehicle. There were also a dozen or so potential buyers there to test drive Krug vehicles (Krug brought 2 more vehicles for this purpose).
Our trainer lead our small convoy from his black Mercedes G-Wagon (see photo at top of this post for our convoy), and gave us instructions over 2-way radios, and often stopped at key locations to give us one-on-one instructions (e.g. “Don’t die”).
There was some in-class theoretical workshops, but they were mainly given in German and our Google translate app didn’t work well in a class environment (too much background noise), but it didn’t really matter as we were really there for the live action training!
I didn’t get a lot of photos during the weekend as I was mainly in the passenger seat hanging on for dear life! Some of the other event attendees sent us some video clips they took, which we have combined into a single video…
We learned a lot about the capabilities of our Arocs truck, mainly that it is more capable than us! It was a fantastic weekend and we learned: gearbox selection (Rosie has hi-speed and lo-speed gearboxes); gear selection (Rosie has 12 gears, 3 automatic modes and 1 manual mode), differential lock selection (Rosie has 3 differentials); when to use engine brakes; and when to use “Hill Assist” mode (stops the truck from rolling backwards during on-hill stops/starts). A very educational weekend!
