Ramsko Lake, Bosnia

We had heard about this lake from a couple that we met in Jajce, so when we were in the general area we decided to give it a look. We found a campground that was located at the end of a peninsula that projected into the lake. A very narrow road to get to the place. As we were inching our way down this road we hoped: (i) that we wouldn’t meet any oncoming traffic, and (ii) that there would be enough room to turn around at the end. We didn’t meet any oncoming traffic, but we did have to squeeze around a car that was parked half way onto the road.

We reached the end of the road and found our campground in a beautiful spot on the edge of the lake. Even better, we were the only vehicle in the campground!

We found out later (have to love Google Translate) that the owner’s father used to “live at the bottom of the lake”. We thought that this was a Google Translate problem, but it turned out that the father used to live on the banks of Ramsko river, which was flooded in 1968 to make a lake for a new hydro-electric plant. The father’s family was displaced by this project and, after the lake was flooded, purchased the land on the peninsula in 1980. The son later turned the land into a campground, and is currently expanding and improving the facilities for campers. The owner is an amazing tile setter. The tile work in bathrooms and showers is amazing.

We paid 30 euro for two nights, which included power, water, use of bathroom/shower facilities and laundry. We took advantage of everything except the power as the sun was shining and our solar panels kept our batteries topped up.

The lake is beautiful. The water level is currently about 15 metres below last years level due to water release for power generation. The lake is quite deep, 95 metres, and the water is quite clear. During a windless period we managed to get some great photos with reflections on the water.
