Rowan’s Ravine Provincial Park, Saskatchewan

We finally found a veterinarian who does spaying and gastropexy (stomach stapling, recommended for large dogs) via laparoscopic surgery versus open surgery (can’t believe that so many vets still use the older more invasive type of surgery), so we have to be in Edmonton, Alberta in time for SweetPea’s vet consult on May 30.

We have a plan to get there and our first stop is Rowan’s Ravine Provincial Park in Saskatchewan. It is about a 4-1/2 drive from our current location in Rivers Provincial Park, Manitoba.

Rowan’s Ravine is a large park with about 300 camping sites. We originally selected a site on an outside loop next to the park boundary. The thinking was that it would be quieter (May long weekend holiday) and that the park boundary would be adjacent to undeveloped forest area. Nope. Next to the park is a subdivision, so we moved to another site on the edge of the lake. Our neighbours are now other campers instead of houses.

The campground is located on the edge of Last Mountain Lake, which is 93 km long and only 3 km at its widest point. A very long and narrow lake.

Even though the campground has an incredible amount of amenities (water park, restaurant, store, showers, laundry, playgrounds, beaches, etc) there are still a lot of treed areas which give this busy park a more serene feel.

The only detraction from the serenity was the mosquitos! Yep, we are back in Canada in the spring. Thank you IRS (if not for the US rule that enables the IRS to tax tourists like US citizens if you stay for more than 183 days in the US, we would still be in the US).

We put up our screen tent for the first time since we left Canada last October. I also applied bug spray for the first time since we left Canada. Yuch. Good thing they have great showers here!

And speaking of amenities… there is also a dog park and a dog beach!  Lot’s of fun off-leash time for the kids.
